Psychopaths more likely to harm others for greater good, empathy key to moral decision-making.
This research aimed to understand how personality traits influence people's choices in scenarios involving harming someone for the greater good. They studied how psychopathic traits, social views, beliefs about dehumanization, and empathy affect decisions in everyday dilemmas like excluding a friend or firing someone from a job. The results revealed that people with psychopathic traits were more likely to endorse harming someone for personal gain. In situations involving social exclusion, beliefs about dehumanization were influential, while in job-related scenarios, social dominance views played a bigger role. Feeling for the victim emotionally led to more ethical decisions, but understanding their perspective didn’t. Finally, in job scenarios, understanding the victim's viewpoint led to more practical choices. Overall, the study shows that various personality traits can sway how we make tough decisions about others.
