New high-yielding hybrids offer hope for arid regions' food security.
Pearl millet hybrids were tested in the hot arid region of Rajasthan to find ones that flower early and yield more grain. Out of 184 hybrids, only 45 flowered in less than 45 days, with some yielding over 30 q/ha. The study showed that hybrids with early flowering also had higher grain yield, but this could reduce fodder yield. Therefore, it is important to develop hybrids that are both early and productive for both grain and fodder in arid regions.
