Phototrophic sulfur bacteria use sulfur compounds as electron donors for photosynthesis. Purple and green sulfur bacteria oxidize sulfide, sulfur, and thiosulfate for energy. Enzymes involved in sulfur oxidation have been studied in detail, revealing a complex and modular metabolism. Despite their evolutionary differences, both types of bacteria play important roles in the sulfur cycle as anaerobic oxidizers.
