Biochar can improve soil quality by reducing bulk density and increasing water holding capacity. In a lab study using sandy and sandy loam soils, biochar decreased bulk density and raised water holding capacity. Sandy soil responded more at lower biochar levels, while sandy loam soil needed higher concentrations. Small biochar particles reduced bulk density of sandy soil more, while large particles had a greater effect on sandy loam soil. Overall, biochar can be tailored to specific soil needs, potentially increasing water storage in both soil types.
