Contact reduces prejudice in right-wing individuals towards specific outgroups.
Intergroup contact can help reduce prejudice, especially in people who are more likely to be prejudiced. A study looked at how contact with different stigmatized groups affects prejudice in individuals high in right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO). The study found that contact reduced prejudice against lesbians and gay men, Indigenous Australians, and people with schizophrenia in those high in RWA or SDO. However, contact only reduced prejudice against people with schizophrenia in those low in RWA or SDO. This suggests that the effectiveness of contact in reducing prejudice depends on the targeted stigmatized group and the level of prejudice held against them.
