WTO faces challenges in combating rising global illicit trade issues.
Illicit trade is a growing global issue causing various problems. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has not focused much on addressing this issue directly. A case study involving Colombia-Textile shows that WTO rules do not exclude illicit trade. Despite having exceptions for trade regulation, the WTO ruled that measures against illicit trade are not justified. The current WTO system provides legal grounds to regulate illicit trade, but these agreements have limitations. The report aims to analyze the application of WTO regulations on illicit trade and explore ways for the WTO to contribute to regulating illicit trade. Suggestions include considering decisions from other international organizations, discussing issues in WTO committees, and raising awareness among member countries about the seriousness of illicit trade.
