Innovative use of date palm midribs revolutionizes sustainable rural construction.
Date palm midribs in Egypt are being used to create affordable, sustainable building components for rural communities. The goal was to design wide-span structures using traditional techniques like bundling and friction-based joinery. A 12m span tri-arched space truss system was chosen for its natural shape and lightness. The physical model showed that these components are durable, flexible, and visually appealing, blending traditional and modern design elements. This work aims to provide a sustainable alternative for construction in poor rural areas of Egypt.
