Leguminous green manure boosts crop yields and soil health!
In cold Nordic conditions, researchers studied how legume crops break down in the soil, releasing nitrogen and carbon. They found that different legume species decompose at different rates, with shoot residue breaking down faster than root residue. This means that shoot residue provides nitrogen for the next crop, while root residue breaks down slowly and benefits crops in the following year. By using legumes as green manure, farmers can efficiently manage nitrogen for organic crop production and achieve higher yields.
