Boosting maize yields in East Africa while preserving forests and income
The goal of the study was to develop a model to analyze different ways of managing nutrients for maize farming in East Africa. The researchers found that increasing crop yields in the region could help meet the growing food demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They also discovered that using efficient fertilizers is crucial for successful agricultural intensification. Different nutrient management options can impact farmers' income and greenhouse gas emissions, with some practices being more beneficial for income but contributing more to emissions, and vice versa. The study highlights the need for farmers in East Africa to adopt improved nutrient management practices to increase yields sustainably.
