Oil sands emissions far higher than reported, posing grave climate threat
Canadian oil sands emit more CO2 than previously thought. By using aircraft measurements, researchers found that CO2 emissions from oil sands facilities are 13-123% higher than estimated. This means surface mining operations emit 64% more greenhouse gases, and overall oil sands emissions are 30% higher than reported by the industry. This suggests that CO2 emissions from the oil and gas sector may be more uncertain than we thought.
