Heavy-duty hybrid trucks boost performance, fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions for a greener future.
A framework was developed to design a hybrid powertrain for heavy-duty vehicles based on driving conditions. The goal was to improve performance and fuel efficiency. The researchers used a series hybrid system with an in-wheel motor, reducing vehicle weight by 213 kg and increasing peak power by 53 kW. The hybrid powertrain improved acceleration by 18% and gradeability by 10% compared to a conventional diesel vehicle. The fuel economy of the hybrid powertrain was 53% higher than the diesel powertrain for the target drive cycle.
