Deforestation in Ethiopia Threatens Rural Livelihoods and Environment
Deforestation in Central Ethiopia has led to soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and degraded agricultural land. A study in Kuyu Woreda found that deforestation is caused by high demand for forest products, population growth, lack of awareness about environmental roles of forests, and limited alternative economic activities. This has resulted in soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and variability in rainfall and water supply. To address these issues, it is recommended to increase peasants' income, diversify the rural economy, provide affordable fuel wood, incorporate local knowledge, and promote family planning.
