New database revolutionizes soil management in Europe for sustainable food production.
Soil mapping in Europe helps understand soil resources threatened by environmental changes. A database called SPADE was created to provide detailed soil information for better soil management. The database includes soil properties like root zone capacity and soil organic carbon stocks. By using this database, researchers estimated that Europe's soil organic carbon stocks at a depth of 1 meter are 60×1015 grams. Including secondary soil types in the database improves accuracy, as shown in a case study in Denmark. This harmonized database is a valuable tool for guiding sustainable soil management and food production on a regional and continental scale.
