Central Asia faces severe desertification expansion due to climate change and human activities.
Desertification is a big problem in Central Asia. To understand and stop it, researchers studied the process from 1982 to 2012. They found that desertification got worse in the western part of Central Asia, especially in Xinjiang Province and the Ustyurt Plateau. Different factors caused desertification in different areas: climate change like less rain and more heat hurt grasslands and forests, while human activities like oil exploration and farming affected sparse vegetation and croplands. After the Soviet Union fell, grasslands in eastern Kazakhstan started to recover from desertification. Inefficient irrigation in the Amu Darya River delta made croplands salty and led to more desertification. Central Asia needs to act to stop desertification and protect its environment.
