Aquatic insects play a key role in transferring important omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from water to land ecosystems. Researchers calculated the amount of these fatty acids transferred by emergent aquatic insects in different biomes. They found that the supply of these fatty acids to land areas is lower than previously thought, which could lead to food quality limitations for terrestrial animals.
