Stony soils in mountain catchments reveal hidden water flow secrets
Water moves quickly through certain pathways in stony soils. This study looked at how many of these pathways exist, how much water they let through, and where they are in a mountain area in Slovakia. They found that forests with lots of rocks have the most pathways, which decrease in number as you go deeper into the soil. These pathways can let in between 63% to almost 100% of the water. Even though they can carry a lot of water, they don't take up much space in the soil. Overall, these pathways make up around 2% to 23% of the soil volume.
