Hangzhou Bay Wetland Ecosystem Values Soar, Urgent Call for Conservation.
The study looked at how the value of wetlands in Hangzhou Bay, China has changed over time. By analyzing satellite data from 1990, 2000, and 2010, researchers found that the ecosystem service value of the wetlands decreased from 1990 to 2000 but then increased by 2010. Rivers and lakes had the highest value, followed by paddy fields and shallow waters. Water conservation and material production were the most important services provided by the wetlands, making up over 70% of the total value. The value of recreation in the wetlands has also gone up in recent years. The study suggests promoting tourism and aquaculture while reducing pollution to protect the natural wetlands.
