New study reveals how to minimize drawdown in low-permeability aquifers.
Unconfined aquifers over fractured bedrocks can have complex water flow patterns when wells are pumped. This study developed solutions for different well configurations in such aquifer systems, like horizontal and vertical wells with collectors. By using mathematical transformations and numerical methods, the researchers found how drawdown (water level drop) changes with different well types and aquifer properties. These solutions can help estimate aquifer parameters from pumping test data and design wells to minimize drawdown in low-permeability areas. The study also showed how to apply these solutions to leaky aquifers.
