Reduced grazing pressure boosts profits and cuts greenhouse gases in China's steppe.
Overgrazing can harm grasslands, so researchers in northern China studied different grazing levels to find the best approach. They found that moderate grazing pressure is ideal for keeping grasslands productive, diverse, and profitable, while also reducing greenhouse gases. Lower stocking rates can improve grassland quality and increase sheep weight gain. Resting grasslands in early summer helps maintain good composition, but may lower incomes. By reducing grazing pressure, we can improve the environment and sustain herder livelihoods.
