Large-scale coal mining leads to drastic land use changes in China.
Large-scale opencast coal mining in China's Shanxi province has led to significant changes in land use. By using a complex network approach, researchers analyzed land use data from 1986 to 2015 in the Pingshuo coal mine area. They found that agricultural land decreased while construction and industrial areas increased. Key land types shifted over time, with poor overall stability due to mining activities. To improve land use, measures like land-saving mining, agricultural protection, and land reclamation are recommended.
