Lubigi Wetland in Uganda Successfully Reduces Nitrogen and Faecal Coliform Pollution
The Lubigi wetland in Uganda helps clean up nitrogen and faecal coliform pollution before it reaches Lake Kyoga. Scientists studied the wetland by collecting plant and sediment samples, as well as water samples from the inlet and outlet. They found that the wetland removes about 24.9% of nitrogen, equivalent to 1,672 tons annually. Wetland plants and sediments store nitrogen, with faecal coliforms reduced by about 66.5%. This shows that the Lubigi wetland plays a crucial role in protecting Lake Kyoga from pollution.
