Study reveals hidden bursts in storms could impact flood predictions
Designing flood management systems involves understanding how intense storms can lead to flooding. Researchers studied how bursts of heavy rainfall within storms can impact flood predictions. They found that these "embedded bursts" can occur in rainfall data used for modeling floods. The severity of these embedded bursts is mainly influenced by the design rainfall curves used, rather than the timing of the rainfall. To accurately account for these embedded bursts, filtering of the rainfall data is necessary after combining design rainfalls and temporal patterns.
