Green Roofs Leach Dangerous Phosphorus, Threatening Waterways Nationwide
The study aimed to understand how green roofs affect stormwater runoff and water quality in New England. They looked at a green roof on a building to see if it leaked phosphorus into the rainwater. Comparisons showed that phosphorus was indeed seeping into the runoff, especially during rainy periods. To investigate further, they conducted lab tests using parts of the green roof. Their experiments confirmed that the green roof absorbed some of the phosphorus, but some still leaked out. Overall, the green roof panels worked well to control water flow during different rain conditions.
