The researchers studied how different sizes of sand particles, the thickness of the filter bed, and the expansion of the filter bed height affect the backwash process in a sand filter prototype used for irrigation. They tested various combinations of these factors in a small-scale sand filter model. The results showed that the prototype accurately characterized the backwash process and could achieve specific filter bed height expansion by adjusting the sand particle size and filter bed thickness.
