French Parliament gains power to hold Government accountable for public spending.
The French Parliament has more power over the budget since the adoption of the LOLF in 2001. MPs can now make changes to the budget and have better information about the country's financial situation. The Finance Committees also have more authority to investigate. While the initial results are positive, it's unclear if Parliament can effectively hold the government accountable after the money is spent. Strengthening the relationship between Parliament and the Cour des Comptes, as well as the role of the MEC, is recommended to improve oversight of taxpayer money.
