Soil classification trends reveal gaps in global research priorities and knowledge transfer.
Soil classification is important for organizing knowledge and communicating results. A study looked at how soil classification was used in journal papers from 1975 to 2014. They found that Soil Taxonomy and WRB were used more over time, but not as fast as the increase in soil science papers. Different types of soils were studied unequally, with some types being researched more than others. Soil factor and property naming increased faster than the use of Soil Taxonomy and WRB. Some journals focused on specific soil types, like forest soil or agricultural soil. The lack of soil classification in papers can make it hard to share information and results.
