Cereal Rye Cover Crops Boost Organic Soybean Yields and Weed Suppression
Cover crops like cereal rye and triticale can help organic farmers manage weeds without excessive tilling. A study compared these cover crops in soybean fields in Wisconsin, USA, and Southern France. Cereal rye was found to be more effective at suppressing weeds and increasing soybean yields compared to triticale. However, cover crop biomass was often lower than ideal for optimal weed suppression. Environmental factors and farming decisions also played a role in the success of cover crops. Future research should focus on developing tools to help farmers make better decisions about cover crop management to improve weed control and crop yields.
