Turning Waste into Wealth: Breakthrough Process Unlocks Valuable Chemicals from Lignin
Lignin, a component of plants, can be broken down into useful chemicals. One challenge is that the broken-down pieces can stick back together during the process. Scientists found a way to prevent this by changing certain parts of lignin and then breaking it down using a special chemical. This method converted 74.5% of lignin into small molecules, with 19.4% turning into useful aromatic compounds. This new method is better than other ways of breaking down lignin that have been tried before.
