Countries deindustrializing faster reach environmental turning point sooner, study finds.
The article explores the relationship between economic development and environmental quality, focusing on a point where environmental conditions start to improve. The researchers used a hazard-based duration model to study when this turning point occurs during the process of (de)industrialization. They found that countries moving away from industrialization reach this point almost twice as fast as industrializing countries. Countries experiencing nonpremature deindustrialization and positive deindustrialization reach the turning point even faster. Additionally, technological progress plays a role in speeding up the transition to improved environmental conditions.
