Manure use in farming may lead to lower crop nitrogen uptake.
Livestock manure and inorganic fertilizer were compared for their efficiency in providing nitrogen to crops. The study found that crops took up nitrogen more efficiently from inorganic fertilizer than from manure. Despite this, grain yield was similar between the two treatments. Total soil nitrogen increased over time in both treatments. The lower efficiency of nitrogen uptake from manure suggests a potential for environmental pollution, but proper timing and application rates could help optimize crop use efficiency and reduce environmental risks.
