The article introduces a new way to measure how influential scientific journals are called SNIP. This method considers the subject area of a journal and how often authors cite other papers. SNIP helps compare journals from different fields by looking at how many times each paper is cited compared to the average in its subject area. The study found that citation potential varies between different subject categories and even within the same category. Basic journals tend to have higher citation potential than applied or clinical ones, and journals on new topics have higher potential than those on traditional subjects. SNIP helps to account for these differences, allowing for fair comparisons between journals.
