Unmanaged Solid Waste Threatens Health and Environment in Southern Ethiopia
Solid waste in Halaba town, Ethiopia is increasing due to urbanization, causing challenges in waste management. A study found that households generate 0.271kg of waste per person per day, with most being organic waste like food scraps. Only 18% of waste is collected by the municipality, leading to uncontrolled dumping. The town faces financial constraints and lack of community awareness in managing waste. To improve, sustainable waste management practices like recycling and composting should be promoted through education campaigns.
