The researchers found a way to indirectly determine leaf area index (LAI) by using ground cover and plant height. They took pictures of plant canopies to estimate the green cover fraction and created an equation to calculate LAI from this data. The technique was tested on different crops and compared to a plant canopy analyzer. The results showed that the photographic method was effective for determining LAI.
