Mercury contamination threatens drinking water and food source in Suriname.
The water quality of the Palumeu River in Suriname's interior was assessed at 14 sites. Overall, the water quality is typical for undisturbed aquatic ecosystems, except for mercury. High levels of mercury were found in sediment and fish tissue samples, suggesting an external source. Further monitoring is crucial as these headwaters are vital for drinking water and food for local communities downstream.
