China's Forests Emerge as Powerful Carbon Sinks, Boosting Climate Change Mitigation
Forests in China are important for storing carbon. By analyzing data from 1977 to 2013, researchers found that China's forests are absorbing carbon at a rate of 99.07 Tg C per year. The amount of carbon stored in forest biomass has increased by 72.62% during this time, reaching 7.27 Pg C. Natural forests have higher carbon density than planted forests, with the biggest increases in carbon stocks seen in the eastern and northern regions. This study shows that China's forests will continue to store more carbon in the future due to the large area of young and middle-aged planted forests.
