Decreasing river flow leads to smaller phytoplankton dominating coastal ecosystems.
The study looked at how small phytoplankton in Gwangyang Bay, Korea change with river discharge. They found that as river input decreased, small phytoplankton increased in importance. Small phytoplankton had higher amounts of food material and energy compared to larger phytoplankton. This suggests that river inputs affect the size and food quality of phytoplankton, which is important for managing coastal areas.
