Ancient seismic events shaped oil-rich sand bodies in China's basin.
Soft-sediment deformation structures in the Chang 6 oil member of the Yanchang Formation in China's Ordos Basin were studied. These structures, like ball-and-pillow shapes and fold structures, were caused by ancient earthquakes. Sand bodies in the area were shaped by seismic events and gravity slumping, resulting in two main types: those formed during normal sedimentation and those formed by turbidites due to seismic activity. This research helps us understand how sand bodies in this region were created by different processes.
