Touristic Oasis Beach at Risk of Erosion and Storm Damage
The research focused on ensuring the safety and durability of Oasis Beach in Varadero, Cuba, a popular tourist destination. The study found that erosion was affecting the beach due to a harbor groyne blocking sediment transport. To address this, the researchers proposed demolishing existing structures, building a new groyne, and adding sand to maintain a 40-meter beach width. However, this solution was not durable as maintenance was needed frequently. The study also assessed the impact of tropical storms on the beach and tested evacuation plans for hurricanes. The findings emphasized the need to consider cross-shore erosion processes and infrastructure safety to protect tourists and investments in the area.
