Climate change driving water scarcity in North China Plain, study finds.
Evapotranspiration (ET) in the North China Plain was studied from 1998 to 2005. Reference ET, pan evaporation, and actual ET were analyzed. Precipitation increased, while temperature, humidity, and ET decreased. Actual ET increased monthly and annually. Climatic factors and crop characteristics influenced ET. Higher crop coefficients and leaf area index led to increased water demand in crops.
