Earthworms revolutionize paper mill waste into nutrient-rich organic manure.
Paper mill wastes can be turned into useful organic manure through vermicomposting with earthworms. Adding 10 earthworms per kg of waste mixture was found to be the best for quicker and quality conversion. More earthworms initially sped up the process, but too many caused competition for food and slowed it down. The resulting vermicompost had more plant nutrients, which helped wheat seedlings grow better. This study shows that the number of earthworms used is crucial for efficient decomposition of paper mill wastes and nutrient release for plant growth.
