Moderate grazing boosts root growth in alpine meadows, benefiting biodiversity.
Grazing affects plant growth in alpine grasslands. Different levels of grazing intensity were studied, from no grazing to heavy grazing. Moderate grazing led to the highest root biomass in the soil. Aboveground plant biomass decreased with more grazing, but sedges and legumes increased while forbs decreased. Grass biomass stayed the same. More roots were found in the upper soil layers with increased grazing. This suggests that moderate grazing is best for root production in alpine meadows.
