Overcrowding of Intertidal Fishes in Mauritius Tidepools Raises Conservation Concerns
Intertidal fishes in Mauritius were studied to understand their habitat and population changes. Researchers found 292 fish species in Mauritius, with 62 species living in tidepools. The number of species in tidepools increased with more rocks, boulders, and macro-algae. Two species, Bathygobius coalitus and Istiblennius edentulus, were most common in small pools during low tide. The population of resident species has decreased over the years, likely due to human impacts like pollution.
