China's Unbalanced Land Use and Urbanization Threaten Sustainable Development
The article examines how land use and urbanization are connected in different regions of China. Researchers created a system to measure intensive land use and new urbanization levels in 31 provinces. They found that urbanization is more advanced in the east, while the west lags behind. Sustainable land use is strong in China, with the east having the most benefits. Urbanization in China focuses on economic and social aspects, with the east leading in economic benefits. There is a spatial pattern of high development in the east and low in the west. Most regions have a high level of conflicting development, with some areas needing better coordination. High coordination is seen in eastern regions like Guangdong and Jiangsu, while western regions like Xinjiang and Gansu need improvement.
