Reduced tillage with cover crops leads to higher weed infestation.
Reducing tillage in organic farming can lead to more weeds, but using cover crops can help manage them. A study in Finland looked at how different cover crop mixtures affected weed growth in cereals. They found that cover crops slowed down weed growth in winter wheat, but couldn't stop perennial weeds in reduced tillage systems. After two years, weed biomass was higher and spring wheat yield was lower in reduced tillage plots compared to plowed ones. However, using leguminous cover crops did improve grain yield. More research is needed to see how cover crops affect weeds in the long term and before plowing.
