Plastic mulch boosts maize yields, transforming food security in Northeast China
Plastic-film mulching can help maize plants grow better in Northeast China. Researchers tested different mulching patterns and durations to see which worked best. They found that using ridge-furrow mulch throughout the season led to taller plants, more leaves, and higher grain yields. This method increased plant height by almost 18% compared to no mulch. The mulch also boosted aboveground plant biomass, especially in the early stages of growth. Overall, using ridge-furrow mulch all season long is recommended for improving maize production in this region.
