Leachate Recirculation Boosts Waste Landfill Efficiency in Arid Areas.
The researchers studied how different ways of managing waste affect the quality of the liquid that comes out of landfills. They used small-scale models to mimic real landfills in a semi-dry area. They found that adding liquid back into the landfill helps remove waste better than just letting it sit there. In the rainy season, the liquid's pH and conductivity changed a lot, while in the dry season, they decreased steadily. The type of landfill with liquid added back in removed 98% of the waste, compared to 58% in the other type. The quality of the liquid was the main difference between the two methods.
