Understory shrub removal fails to boost growth of true fir saplings.
The study looked at how removing shrubs from around young fir trees affected their growth. They found that after the shrubs were removed, the fir trees grew wider and taller, but this growth didn't last long. The best predictor of how well the trees would respond to the removal was how fast they were growing before the shrubs were taken out. Overall, the growth increase from removing the shrubs wasn't big enough to make it worth the cost.
