New Study Reveals Key to Enhancing Fracture Toughness in Pressure Tubes
The researchers tested the strength of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes by creating cracks in samples and measuring their toughness. They found that at high temperatures, cracks in the samples had similar toughness regardless of the tube's original strength. However, at room temperature, cracks in weaker tubes were more brittle. By using specific constants, they could predict the toughness of samples with uniform cracks.
