Overexploitation of Vital Aquifer in Peru Threatens Water Security.
The Lower Piura Sub-basin Aquifer in Peru is a crucial water source, but it's being overused. A study created a model to understand the aquifer system and its problems. They found that the water table in the unconfined aquifer stays stable, but the confined aquifer is being depleted at a rate of 1.6 meters per year. The aquifer is losing more water than it gains, mainly due to excessive pumping for irrigation. This overexploitation is unsustainable and is harming the aquifer, especially the confined part. The study suggests that action needs to be taken to prevent further damage to the aquifer system.
