Turkish blanket bogs facing extinction as Sphagnum diversity declines.
Turkish blanket bogs are rare habitats with acidic, mineral-poor conditions that only a few organisms can survive in. Some of these bogs in Turkey are endangered, like Yilanlitas Yaylasi and Ciger Golu. Despite low moss diversity, Sphagnum moss is a common and important species in these areas. Researchers found 21 different types of Sphagnum moss in Turkish blanket bogs, with species like S. subsecundum, S. platyphyllum, and S. angustifolium being the most common.
